Love it! Thanks for meeting with me in August, btw. I did not really know of your work except through Ignite Phoenix and the Yelp Rocks event in July. I loved your work on both of these projects, not sure if you got paid or not, but you got some referral out of it. I would say, keep doing what you love. Business is a question, and the answer to that will evolve as you do personally, and professionally. Don't beat yourself up over those projects that don't pay out, just say no, perhaps refer them to a student or someone you know (like you did me for the doggie portrait:-)~).

Too many super personal, free events are sure to wear you out, so I think this is a good way of moving forward, oh and putting food on the table. One can not live on tequila alone.

Good luck with your creative evaluation.

As for event photography, I know several photographers who use events as a quick income supplement, however they are not approached by the event coordinators, they do the approaching. They solicit the event manager, state that they are willing to come shoot the event for X hours, and produce X # of finished images for a flat rate. Often these are exhibits, car shows, pageants, etc where they can also tack on a few individual shoots with each model, car, or product being displayed.

It may not be the direction you want to go, but I thought I'd share the pitch they use :-)

Sounds like a well-thought plan, Tyson. Good for you! I am certain your work and your well-being will benefit. We should all be so thoughtful about how we are working and how our creativity could benefit from introspection.
